German infrastructure sensing and efficiency specialist Smarteag AG acquires new type of acoustic sensor system in development by Siemens Convergence Creators.
Vienna – 01. April 2016: Today, Smarteag AG announced the acquisition of WaySense® DAS (Digital Acoustic Sensing), a groundbreaking fiber-sensing technology from Siemens Convergence Creators.
WaySense® turns optical fibers into thousands of virtual microphones that measure acoustic effects around specific assets. Fiber sensing provides an area-wide recognition of events using standard telecommunications fiber-optic cables without modification.
Technically, acoustic incidents along the measurement unit will alter the backscatter of a laser signal inside the optic fiber. This information or signal is amplified, digitized, and fed into analyzers where intelligent algorithms are used in order to identify incidents.
Commercial applications for the WaySense® technology include, among others, sensing products for the Oil and Gas, Road, and Rail surveillance markets.
Additional applications include the monitoring of telco fiber in telecommunications contexts, mine monitoring, border control and the monitoring of high / medium voltage grids.
After years of R&D activity, there is an existing WaySense® prototype with functioning early product release versions. At present a successful trial installation is deployed and working at an Austrian highway in cooperation with the Austrian Highway Authorities.
“Siemens Convergence Creators is an excellent technology partner for Smarteag. WaySense® perfectly complements our existing sensing technology portfolio, particularly within Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing. The WaySense® acquisition will improve our capabilities in our focus area of infrastructure sensing, monitoring and management to raise infrastructure and resource efficiency”, said Christian Damjakob, CEO of Smarteag AG.
” WaySense® is a cutting-edge, early-bird technology with great potential in the utilization of fiber-optics sensing. Its advanced prototype status will enable Smarteag AG to directly tackle their strategic goals and offer comprehensive sensing solutions for a variety of highly attractive target markets, which are not in the focus of Siemens Convergence Creators”, says Daniel Felicio, CEO of Siemens Convergence Creators.
